It might have also had something to do with my hatred of fluorescent lighting. But for whatever reason, I (thankfully) developed the belief that there was something more meant for me in life.
Moving on to a more fulfilling life didn't just happen overnight. But, the time it took was worthwhile because process of change taught me something really valuable.
One of the big lessons I learned was that, once we have heard that quiet inner voice asking for a more purpose-filled life, it only gets harder and harder to ignore it.
Oh, but I tried.
I tried to find ways to convince myself I was satisfied. I even tried shaming myself--who do you think you are to ask for more? Look at how many people have less than you! What do you really have to complain about here?
Yet, it was like the universe just kept wanting me to be aware of my own potential. Time and time again, I felt called toward a different life.
Eventually, I just couldn't ignore that there was something more I was meant to do with my life, and it was time to start doing it.
That’s not to say that change comes easily once you make that decision. Or, that simply knowing what you want makes everything fall into place.
This is real life, and that means that it takes hard work to set and achieve goals.
“Knowing” is only one step in the journey towards living the life of your dreams, and, in reality, a whole lot of people don't start off knowing where they want to go--only where they no longer want to be.
I can assure you, once you are on your path, it's still not a smooth ride to get "there" either.
In the real world, there are roadblocks, potholes, bridge closures, and even landmines. We fail at things we try (oftentimes, more than we succeed). We get stuck. We lose our way. And, sometimes, we lose parts of ourselves that take a good chunk of time to rebuild.
Real life puts obstacles in your path.
But, obstacles are not ending points. Obstacles mean that you change your direction to reach your goal, not that you change your decision to get there.
The change of direction that occurs with impediments isn’t an automatic negative. I have had some of the best experiences of my life because of unplanned things that pushed me off of my preconceived path.
Knowing that things aren’t always going to happen according to your plans makes it a whole lot easier to course-correct when you encounter detours, too.
Anticipating bumps along the way means that you stop viewing obstacles as a deal-breaker, and you start accepting them as an expected (and often, joyful) part of the journey. This is the heart and soul of resiliency. Success, after all, is not measured by never falling, but, instead, by rising after each fall.
Never, ever see a detour or obstacle as a derailment.
