At
first, it may sound strange to hear me, of all people, saying that
walking away is a good idea. My whole career, after all, is about
helping people succeed in life goals. But the truth is: letting go is a
really important part of success.
Letting go is not the same thing as giving up. Letting go doesn't make you a quitter. It means that you have decided you will no longer be tethered to something that is holding you back from the life you were meant to live--whether that "something" is a relationship, job, feeling or a way of living that is no longer serving you.
Letting go is heroic.
This doesn't mean that you should walk away from anything that takes work. There is real value in struggle. Struggle is the way that we cultivate hope. It's how we learn. And it's the only way to experience growth. But struggle must exist for a purpose. Enduring pointless suffering does not make you a martyr. It makes you a masochist.
5 Really Good Reasons to Let Go
1. You are sacrificing your core beliefs and values.
2. You are unable to connect with your passion or life's purpose.
3. You are holding on because of a fear of the unknown.
4. Your mental, emotional, physical or spiritual health is compromised.
5. You believe in a better life for yourself.
Letting go and moving on does not mean you have failed. True failure only comes with never having tried for something in the first place. Acknowledging, on the other hand, that something you tried didn't work is incredibly valuable because it gives you an opportunity to learn, make changes and try again.
I don't know about you, but I would much rather regret the things I did do than those I never tried.
If there is something that you want in life, it usually requires a certain amount of change. Letting go is about facing the fact that what you are doing isn't working, but also about embracing this change as a step away from where you no longer want to be, and closer to where you want to go.
No one will ever be able to tell you if you are doing the "right" thing. (And, if anyone ever tries, you should probably run far, far away from them as fast as you can because, nine times out of ten, that is a person who is only trying to control or manipulate you.) But one thing I know for sure is that you will never be able to explore new lands if you do not have the courage to lose sight of the shore.
May you always choose to call upon courage and be heroic in the story of your life!
